What Is Diversity?

Diversity refers to human qualities that are different from our own and those of groups to which we belong; but that are manifested in other individuals and groups.

Dimentions of diversity are never ending although we do tend to focus on the “Big 5” as we say; ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, religion and physical ability.

The best diversity definition is “All relevant differences”. What we have in common is that we are different.

Why is a diversity and includion so essential to the success of organizations today?

The globalization of our planet, development in communication, as well as constant changes in our societies have created a new and complex competitive environment. In order to be successful, organizations need to continually rethink their way of functioning and being successful. One of the key factors to ensure sustainability and competetive advantage is through a diverse and inclusive workforce which ...

  • provides valuable insight into new market and guides business strategies

  • is essential to foster innovation and creativity to reflect the complex development of markets

  • allows multiple voices to generate new ideas, new services, and new products, and encourage out-of-the box thinking.

  • can relate, build relationship and trust with a diverse mix of clients and stakeholders

  • allows the organization to become an attractive employer and access additional pockets of talents and competence

In order to fully unleach the potential of a diverse workforce, we need to make room for differences to be repected and valued

“Diversity fosters creativity. We need to generate the best ideas from our people in all levels of the company and incorporate them into our business practices.”

                   –Frédéric Rozé, CEO, L’Oréal USA

“We couldn’t have gone through all of the mergers and acquisitions and continue to be successful without having a diverse workforce. It’s important to our business strategy and it makes us more innovative and competitive.”

–Debbie Store y, senior vice president of talent development and chief diversity officer, AT&T
